The fun of a collage is that it’s a complete free-for-all; there are no rules and usually it goes that the messier it is, the better :P This art is where I play with my more edgy artistic taste and my linguistics fetish. This piece is one of a series of five which I’m currently creating.

I am SO excited to finally have completed this collage that I’ve been whining about wanting to do for a while now.

Here’s a look at the whole process without excessive detail – after all, why copy me? Make your own and let it be all your own, too ;)

“Maddie Is...” — 2/5 for the First Collection

I start by reading magazines – over and over and over. I read every magazine I get in the mail* at least three times through — once for reading, exploring fashions and also for the collage, then twice more for the collage(s) I’m working on. While reading, I think to myself, on repeat: “[Person] is…___, [Person] is…” – and I attempt to fill in the blank. In this case, I’m making a collage for my cat, Maddie :P

When I feel I have sufficient (or hopefully too many) cutouts for the collage, I lay all the pieces out over my work area. I loosely organize the cutouts by font size and color.

Once they’re all arranged over the desk, I eyeball to see if any colors or styles clash horribly with the others. I remove all cutouts that aren’t part of the (hopefully) cohesive whole. I also look for colors that pop nicely out of the black and white, and that compliment each other (in whatever style I’m going for, e.g. complimentary colors or monochrome, bright colors or all one genre, such as “fall” colors, etc.).

Here: pink, yellow, green and red pop together :)

To begin, I play with the letters for the title on the desk until I find an arrangement I like.

Then I glue the cutouts on the paper as my eye sees fit, using Mod Podge matte glue and a paintbrush. I also finish the edges with matte acrylic paint.

I quite like this one :)

Yes! I was hoping you’d post a how-to ever since you gave Jason the one you did
    for him. Many thanks.

P.S. I can’t say enough good things for your blogs n vids. I’m twice your age, yet you’re one of the youtubers who help inspire me to keep thinking young & aspiring to that ole “be more than you can be” lifeism…You’re more about the “whole person journey” –not just the weight aspect alone — & our thought processes/interests are very much in synch. Thanks for your courageous sharing spirit. All the Best!!~

cuuuute! I’ve been wanting to do a sort of fashion collage with the clothes I like, this is a kick in the rear to get on and DO IT, looks so nice! You could start accepting orders in which people can send in names and words, it would make a great personalized present, maybe sell them in a frame or something! Great for people who aren’t that creative or can’t find the time.
Well better get on finally doing my own!
    lovies!

My whole life I have wanted to live like a pioneer woman: braving the odds, using hand tools, gardening, building fences and raising chickens... Until that day, I'm blogging about my preparations for homesteading, and about all the colorful goings-on in my life :)
